History:

It was built in 1646 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the unifier of Bhutan, to commemorate his victory over an invading Tibetan army. It was named Druk Yul Dzong, meaning ‘fortress of the dragon country’. The main structure of the dzong consists of a three-storey tower, surrounded by four other towers and walls.
