History:

Drukgyel Dzong, also known as Dargyeling Monastery is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Bhutan. Built during the 17th century, the monastery is located in the Paro district in the Western part of the country. The oldest features of the monastery date back to 1646 when Guru Rinpoche or Padmasambhava prophesied that a monastery would be built on the site by Ngawang Namgyal. During its heyday, Drukgyal Monastery was a powerful fortress, whose sole mission was to defend the entrance of Paro Valley against invading Tibetan forces from the North. During the first war between Bhutan and Tibet, the King's troops of Bhutan defeated the Tibetan army and their leader was taken prisoner and held inside the monastery. Unfortunately, Drukgyel Dzong was destroyed by a devastating fire in 1951 and was left in ruins. However, the site is still of tremendous importance in Bhutan. For one, it is a revered pilgrimage place and every year thousands of Bhutanese and foreign visitors make their way here to experience the unique spiritual atmosphere of the old monastery. Drukgyel Monastery is part of the Kichu Monastery complex and it also contains the ruins of a nearby chapel. The site is a popular tourist attraction in Bhutan and its main features are the beautiful paintings that adorn the walls of the monastery as a reminder of the past.
