Saint Michael's Church was originally a Benedictine abbey founded in 1069, by canonization from Pope Urban II. The abbey was commissioned by Bishop Notger of Liège. During the French Revolution, the abbey was seized and sold to a private buyer in 1796. It was purchased by the City of Liège in 1802, and has since served as a parish church. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Belgium.
