History:

Grand Curtius is a Liège museum, originally founded by a wealthy businessman named Louis-Joseph Curtius in 1842. Located on the banks of the Meuse river, it is the oldest museum in Liège and one of the most important museums in the country. Grand Curtius first opened as a private art gallery, housed in a beautiful mansion owned by Curtius and decorated with sculptures, paintings, tapestries and furniture. The museum quickly gained popularity amongst the upper classes, who gathered there to observe the exotic pieces of art from across Europe. In1874, the entire collection was donated to the city, becoming an official public museum with more than three thousand works of art. Throughout the 20th century, the Grand Curtius was enriched with new acquisitions and also began to host educational initiatives for the public. In recent years, the museum has gained greater attention for its permanent exhibits, which include works from the 19th and 20th centuries, including paintings, sculptures, tapestries, furniture and silverware, as well as archaeological items and decorative arts. The museum also offers an array of temporary exhibitions. Today, the Grand Curtius is considered one of the most important art museums in Belgium, one of the highlights of the Liège region and a must visit for any tour of the country.
