In 1607, a group of English merchants from London founded an English-speaking congregation at the Oude Leliestraat in Amsterdam. Dutch Reformed Church minister Jan Ripperda was appointed as the first minister of the church. In 1620, the church was officially recognized by the Dutch authorities. During the 17th century, English merchants, traders and refugees who had fled their homeland to escape religious persecution flocked to the church.
