Pokrovskaya Tserkov' In Belarus: History,Facts, & Services

Pokrovskaya Tserkov' is a Russian Orthodox Church in Moscow. It was built in 1544 and is one of the oldest churches still in active use in the Russian capital. The Church is dedicated to the Protection of the Mother of God and is a prominent symbol of Moscow's spiritual heritage. History Pokrovskaya Tserkov' was built during the reign of Ivan the Terrible (1530-1584). Built in the Moscow Baroque style, the church was constructed on what is believed to be the site of a pagan temple from the 10th century. This historic temple was believed to be sacred to the Krivichs, an ancient people inhabiting the lands around Moscow. The church was built in the form of a cross, with a dome set above its central hall. The interior of the church is richly decorated with paintings and frescoes in the Byzantine style, which have been maintained and restored over the centuries. Facts The Church has four altars: the main altar, dedicated to the Protection of the Mother of God; the left side altar dedicated to St. Nicholas; the right side altar dedicated to the Icon of the Mother of God of Pokrova; and the Holy Doors altar, dedicated to the annunciation of Jesus’ birth. The Church also has a bell tower, where the bells are rung on Sundays and religious holidays. Services Pokrovskaya Tserkov' hosts weekly religious services for parishioners and visitors, and provides blessings for babies, young children, and newlyweds. It also has a well-stocked library, providing access to a variety of religious books and other materials. The Church also provides cafes and dining facilities for visitors and parishioners.
