Church of Saints Simon and Helena In Belarus: History,Facts, & Services

Church of Saints Simon and Helena is an Eastern Orthodox church located in St. Petersburg, Russia that serves as the official cathedral of the Russian Orthodox Church. The church was designed by architect Alexander Ivanov in the Neo-Byzantine Revival style and built from 1838 to 1848. It stands in the historic center of St. Petersburg on the Nevsky Prospekt. History Church of Saints Simon and Helena was built in the wake of the Revolution of 1825, an event that changed life in Russia, and it is seen to be a symbol of the religious freedom associated with the new reign of Tsar Nicholas I. The church was funded by the Tsar’s daughter, Grand Princess Helena Pavlovna, who wanted to honor her late parents with a memorial in the city. Facts -The exterior of the Church of Saints Simon and Helena is adorned with golden domes and yellow brick walls. -The church’s five-domed design pays homage to the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem, a reflection of its spiritual significance. -The interior is decorated with bronze relief sculptures and intricate frescos by the Russian artist, Mikhail Scotti. -The church is notable for its “Akathist of Thanksgiving” hymn, which pays homage to Nicholas I’s reign. Services -Weekly liturgies, liturgies for feast days, confessions, and memorials are all services offered at the Church of Saints Simon and Helena. -The church also serves as an educational center, offering classes in theology and the history of the Russian Orthodox Church. -The church also offers a variety of charitable activities and services, including a free meal program and a home hospice.
