The Sri Thendayuthapani Temple – Sydney, New South Wales, Australia follows the traditional style of Hindu worship in which devotees offer prayer to Sri Thendayuthapani (Lord Murugan—the deity of the temple). The Puja (service to the deity) consists of various rituals and offerings of flowers and food to the God. The Puja starts with Abhishekam, a ritual pouring of sacred liquids (usually milk, honey, and water) over the deity’s murti (a sculpted representation of the deity) to cleanse and sanctify it. The Abhishekam is followed by chanting of Veda mantras and offering of special items such as fruits, incense, camphor, coriander leaves, flowers, and coconuts, among others.
