History:

The Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW) in Sydney is one of the oldest and largest public art galleries in Australia. The gallery was officially opened on 14 March 1889 and was the first major institution in Australia devoted to the display, study, maintenance, and promotion of fine and decorative art from around the world. Located next to the Domain in Sydney’s city centre, the Art Gallery has grown to become one of the most diverse and distinctive art galleries in the country, exhibiting mainly Australian painting, sculpture and decorative arts from the 18th century to the present day. The gallery began with the bequest of a collection of works of art by the Governor of New South Wales, Sir Henry Parkes (1815-1896). Parkes was a devoted collector with an advanced knowledge of European art, and the gallery's collection was soon expanded through gifts from other members of the colonial elite. In 1897, the gallery was moved to its current premises on the corner of Art Gallery Road and Eastern Drive following the Art Gallery Act of 1896. The gallery was also well known for its art courses and lectures, which were first held during the 1890s and included instruction on drawing, history and aesthetics. The art courses were extremely popular with the general public, particularly children, and became an important source of revenue for the gallery. At the beginning of the 20th century, the gallery acquired several important collections, including works by artists such as George W. Lambert and Arthur Streeton. The gallery continued to expand and acquire new works over the next decade, with modern works by art movements such as Cubism, Surrealism, and Expressionism joining the existing collections. During the 1950s, the gallery began to host major international exhibitions, including the landmark ‘Abstract Expressionism’ exhibition, which ran from 1955 to 1957.
