History:

The Royal Exhibition Building was built for the 1880 International Exhibition and is located in the Carlton Gardens in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The building is of considerable architectural and historical significance, and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004. The building was designed by Joseph Reed (1823–1890), and is a masterpiece of Victorian industrial construction. The building is built entirely of brick and cement, painted in pastels, and has a large centrally-located dome surrounded by two much smaller domes on the east and west ends. The three domes are based on the original sketches of Joseph Reed and are held up by a cast-iron frame that was envied by architects throughout the world at the time. The three domes also rest on iron girders that are connected at the central dome by four iron piers, similar in style to the Capitol Building in Washington D.C. Constructed as the grand entrance to the 1880 International Exhibition in Melbourne, the building was used for exhibitions, concerts, theatrical performances, and other events until the 1950s.
