Saint Nshan In Armenia is a revered figure in Armenian Gregorian tradition and culture. He was a hermit monk who lived in the 1700s and was born in the village of Ghazakh. He undertook a 5-year religious journey, traveling to places of spiritual importance including Jerusalem and Mount Athos, before settling in a cave near Khor Virap Monastery, south of Mt. Ararat, where he lived for another 50 years in solitude and contemplation. He was known for his reverence for the cross, for his strict adherence to the teachings of the Armenian Apostolic Church, and for his unfailing kindness and hospitality.

Saint Nshan is remembered as a symbol of peaceful coexistence between religions and for his influence in rebuilding Armenian religious life in the period following the 17th century. He was canonized by the Armenian Church and is venerated on his feast day, the 5th of Areg, the day of his death. He is also known as Vardan the Khaldzudzi; the latter name coming from his fasting practices, as Khaldzudzi is Armenian for “one who fasts”.
