Saghmosavank monastic complex In Armenia: History,Facts, & Services
Saghmosavank Monastic Complex in Armenia is an 11th-century monastic complex, located in the village of Saghmosavan in the Ararat province. It is situated on the right bank of the Kasagh River and protected by a defensive wall on three sides. The monastery was built by the prince of nearby Vaspurakan kingdom, Vatche Vachutyan, and his architect, Mkhitar. The monuments that survive today are the cathedral and the gavit, both constructed in the typical Armenian style of the period. The Saghmosavank cathedral, built between 1215-1235 AD, consists of two stories, with a burial chamber, as well as a narthex and a bell tower. The rectangular gavit, or vestibule, built in 1245, is connected to the cathedral by a passageway and is decorated with bas-reliefs of four figures depicting the four evangelists. The complex was used as a monastery until the mid-17th century, when it was damaged by an earthquake and subsequently abandoned. Today, the complex is a popular tourist destination and a cultural and religious center. It also serves as a host site for various religious festivals, cultural events, and ceremonies.
