S. Vardan and S. Hovhannes Baptist chapel-baptistry In Armenia: History,Facts, & Services
S. Vardan and S. Hovhannes Baptist chapel-baptistry is a historical Christian chapel located around 3 km southwest of Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, in the Ararat region. It is believed to be one of the oldest extant Christian structures in the country and is on the list of Armenia's protected monuments. Built in 1714, the beautiful chapel-baptistry stands on a hill overlooking the Oragir Gorge. Originally, the chapel served as a baptistery, attended by thousands of worshippers each year during pilgrimages. Over the centuries, the flowing waters of the Ararat River were used to baptize hundreds of believers in the faith and, more recently, during the Soviet era, provided an auspicious site for national historic events, such as the visit of the first Soviet head of state Nikolay Podgorny in 1967. The chapel remains an active place of Christian worship and is the site of the annual celebration of "Baikar Surb" (feast day of St. Harutyun) in August. Visitors to the site will find a well preserved example of traditional Armenian architecture and receive a warm welcome from the local community.
