The original church was built in the 10th century, but the present building dates back to the 17th century. The original Red Church of Akori was built in the 10th century and was destroyed by an earthquake in 1679. The existing church was built on the ruins of the older structure, and was completed in 1695. The bell tower was added in 1797. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Armenia.
