Hovhannavank In Armenia: History,Facts, & Services

Hovhannavank is an Armenian Apostolic monastery founded in the 5th century by Saint Gregory Vardapet (also known as St Gregory the Illuminator). Located on a steep hill overlooking the Kasakh River, it is located in the village of Saint Hovhannes (formerly Oshakan) in Armenia’s Aragatsotn Province, about 18 kilometres northeast of Ashtarak. The monastery is a significant site for pilgrimage and has been home to the Armenian Church’s leading monks, theologians and metropolitans for centuries. It contains a number of churches and other structures, many of which have been restored over time. The monastery houses some artifacts and art related to Armenian history, and worshippers come to view and ask for blessings from the spiritual leader of the monastery, the Catholicos of All Armenians. Hovhannavank's construction began in the early 5th century, with the first church built in 434. Over the centuries the monastery underwent extensive restoration, repairs and renovations. The largest and most famous church, Surp Karapet, was originally built in the 10th century and was later renovated in 1767. Today, Hovhannavank is one of the most visited sites in Armenia, offering religious services and hosting a number of festivals and cultural events. Visitors can explore the numerous religious monuments, attend festivals and concerts, visit museum exhibits and explore the historic cemetery. The monastery also offers a variety of services, such as educational programs, study trips, translations and spiritual guidance.
