Akhtala Monastery In Armenia: History,Facts, & Services
Akhtala Monastery is an important 10th century Armenian Apostolic Church monastery in Lori Province, Armenia. It is located on the edge of the historical city of Akhtala, or Pghndzahank, which was built in the 8th century, in the heart of the Tumanian region of northern Armenia, right next to the Georgian border. It is a great example of medieval Armenian architecture and is noted for its amazing murals, consisting of a variety of religious scenes, symbols and prayers. The monastery was much damaged by the earthquake of 1931, but was renovated in the 1980s. Today it is a functioning religious center and offers a variety of services.
