St. Joseph's Cathedral, Gualeguaychú is an architectural masterpiece located in the beautiful city of Gualeguaychú in Argentina. It is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Gualeguaychú and serves as the spiritual center of the city. The original building of the cathedral was commissioned in 1901 and completed in 1938. The building was designed by renowned architect Francesco Tamburini who also designed the nearby palace of justice and the iconic clock tower in Gualeguaychú. The exterior of the building is made of white marble and is inspired by the Romanesque Revival style of architecture. There are three naves and an altar surrounded by imposing columns. Two large towers flank the building, one of which houses a peal of bells that still chimes the hours. History In 1862, construction began on the original chapel structure that would later become the Cathedral. This structure was completed in 1901 and served as the spiritual center of the city for more than 3 decades before it was replaced with the current structure. In 1912, plans for a larger, modern designed cathedral were initiated. The construction of the new edifice would span more than 25 years until its completion in 1938.
