He eventually joined the Theatine Order, a Catholic religious order founded by Pope Paul IV in 1524. He was appointed superior of the Theatine House in Florence before returning to Valencia where he passed away in 1547. After his death, his reputation for providing for the poor spread throughout the world and he eventually became known as the patron saint of workers.
