Nuestra Señora del Carmelo In Argentina: History,Facts, & Services
Nuestra Señora del Carmelo is a Roman Catholic title of the Blessed Virgin Mary associated with a method of praying the Rosary known as the Brown Scapular Devotion. The devotion is most commonly associated with the Sindone di Torino (Turin Shroud). History tells of the apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary to the Carmelites Saints, Simon Stock, and Saint Alan de la Roche, who spread the devotion to the world. It is believed that the Virgin Mary promised to protect and intercede for all who wear the Brown Scapular. The devotion includes wearing the Scapular as well as praying the Rosary and daily prayers.
Nuestra Señora del Carmelo is celebrated on July 16 and is observed by the Church in all its forms, including religious orders and lay movements. In the United States, many parishes and communities commemorate the feast with liturgies, Masses and other devotional activities.
Nuestra Señora del Carmelo is remembered for her famous icon (la Virgen del Carmen), which depicts a young Virgin Mary surrounded by angels holding a brown scapular, and wearing a crown of 12 gold stars on a blue background. This iconic representation of the Virgin Mary is a common sight in Latin American and other Catholic churches, and can be found in the basilicas at Lourdes and Fatima.
Nuestra Señora del Carmelo offers many services to those who wish to deepen their faith and knowledge of their Catholic traditions. These services may include seminars and retreats focused on educating members about the Virgin Mary and her role in the Church. Many religious orders offer aid and outreach services to low-income communities and marginalized individuals, including immigrants and victims of human trafficking. Additionally, many churches provide spiritual counseling and guidance, spiritual direction and spiritual accompaniment to all people in need.
