In Rosario, the Monumento a Nicolás Avellaneda is a monument that was inaugurated in 2011 in tribute to the 19th century Argentine president and former Rosario resident, Nicolás Avellaneda. The monument, located in Parque de los Proceres, was designed by sculptor Julio Bentos and includes a large bronze bust of Avellaneda. The bust is 5 feet tall and sits atop a four-meter high unified granite pedestal. The monument also includes a plaque at its base inscribed with the four ballot box votes from different provinces that enabled Avellanada to be the first popularly-elected president of Argentina in 1873. The monument is meant to honour Avellaneda's legacy and contribution to Rosario and Argentina. Avellaneda was born in the city of San Miguel de Tucumán in 1837 and went on to become a lawyer, journalist and politician. He was Rosario's first civil governor in 1862 and went on to found the Partido Autonomista Nacional in 1865. Avellaneda was elected Argentina's 25th president in 1873 and was re-elected in 1874. He is credited with modernising Argentina's railroad and telegraph systems, as well as implementing financial and educational reforms. Avellaneda passed away in Rosario in 1885.
