He is remembered for his leadership of the Partido Revolucionario de los Trabajadores (PRT), also known as the Montoneros, a left-wing urban guerrilla group inspired by the Peronist movement. Throughout the 1970s Santucho and his followers embarked on a campaign of ‘armed propaganda’ targeting Argentinian security forces and establishment figures in order to inspire revolution. In 2011, a memorial to Santucho was built in the La Boca neighbourhood of Buenos Aires. The monument is made of stone and features a mural of his face. The plaque beneath reads ‘in honour of those who fought for justice and freedom’.
