, the Palacio de Gobierno de Salta, or Casa de Gobierno, was initially a Franciscan monastery called "San Francisco de Asís" (St. Francis of Assisi). This monastery was built between 1664 and 1681 and served as a regional religious center. It underwent various renovations and transformations during the course of its long history. In 1811, General Manuel Belgrano amended the building to serve as the headquarters of a colonial administrative body known as the Cabildo (equivalent to a City Hall) of the Province of Salta. The colonial era saw the Cabildo serve as a Spanish-style legal and administrative center. In 1866, President Bartolomé Mitre declared Salta a Federal City, technically raising it to the status of a province. In order to reflect its new provincial status, the Casa de Gobierno was renovated in 1889 by the architects Francisco Elias and Joaquin Tanoira. The design was inspired by French and Italian architectural style elements of the Renaissance and Baroque period. Since then, the palace has been used as the government seat for the province of Salta. It was declared an official Historic National Monument in 1938 by President Roberto M.
