The original Berea Baptist Church building was erected in 1841, when Madison County was largely a rural and primitive area. The church was the second Baptist congregation to be organized in Madison County and was started by two local laymen. The first pastor of Berea Baptist Church was the Rev. Thomas Brunson, who served from 1841 to 1858. The church is also steeped in Civil War history as it was the setting for several key events. In 1861, local troops used the church as a makeshift armory, and it was used for several strategic meetings. When Union troops marched through town in 1862, they stopped at the church and used it for a supply depot. The church was also a stop on the Underground Railroad, as local families helped slaves escape to the North. During military campaigns of 1864, Confederate troops took control of the church, and it was used as a headquarters and hospital.
