Abadia San Benito de Palermo is a historic Benedictine Monastery that was founded in 1208 by King James I of Aragon and is located in Palermo, Sicily. The Monastery was constructed to the south of the city walls, along the old road that led from Palermo to the Valley of the Pianetti. The Monastery is best-known for its Gothic architecture and has been in existence for more than 8 centuries. It consists of a complex of cloisters, courtyards, and suites of connected rooms which were separated and distinct according to gender. The Monastery was a major pilgrimage site in Sicily and is known as the royal abbey in Palermo and it is a symbol of Palermo's golden era. In the late 17th century, Abadia San Benito de Palermo endured a decline. During this period many of their valuable possessions were taken during military campaigns. The Monastery was in a state of disrepair and neglect for many years until it was declared a national monument in 1954 and later restored.
