History:

Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Nazaré in Lubango, Angola, was built in 1905 by the Portuguese colonial government as part of their effort to colonize Angola. The church was meant to be part of the Portuguese Empire's civilizing mission, intended to (in the words of then-governor Vieira de Castro) "spread the light of the teachings of Religion and Progress". The church was built with traditional Portuguese architecture, featuring intricately detailed stonework and Baroque domes. From the beginning, the church was used by the Portuguese as a symbol of their power in Angola and a means of converting the locals. It is reported that when its construction was finished, the colonial government held a ceremony to celebrate its completion and divine glory. In 1975, following Angola's independence from Portugal, the church fell into disrepair. It was not until 2008 that renovations began to be done to the iconic structure. The renovation was funded by the president, José Eduardo dos Santos, in part as a gesture of gratitude towards the Portuguese, who had helped Angola during its civil war. In commemoration of the renovation, a ceremony was held in dedication to the Blessed Virgin Mary and the church was renamed Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Nazaré (Our Lady of Nazareth Church). Today, Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Nazaré is viewed as an important symbol of Lubango, serving both as a reminder of Portugal's past colonization of Angola, and of Angola's post-independence progress.
