The hot spring was believed to have medicinal properties and attracted numerous visitors for its healing powers. Until the 19th century, Caldea was home to a small village and economy built on agriculture, animal husbandry, and trade. However, it was only formally established as a Parish in 1843, combining two distinct villages, Escaldes and Engordany. In 1994, the construction of the Caldea spa complex began in Escaldes-Engordany, transforming the area into a major tourist destination. In 1995, the Caldea complex opened to the public, and it remains a popular attraction and one of the main drivers of tourism in Andorra.
