The base of worship in Gurudwara Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji follows the Sikh tradition and is known as "Gurmat Sangeet". Every morning starts with the recitation of Japji Sahib. This is followed by the singing of hymns and verses of Guru Granth Sahib ji and the recitation of prayers. The main ceremony of the day is held during the afternoon, when the Nagar Kirtan, or procession of singing and chanting, takes place. This is accompanied by instrumental accompaniment including the tabla, dhol and harmonium. The evening includes the main Sikh ceremony, commonly called the "Kirtan Seva", which consists of a two-way conversation between the congregation and the priests. The priests sing verses from Guru Granth Sahib and the congregation responds to the verses with either Amrit Bani or Shabad Bani. This two-way conversation is symbolic of the relationship between a Sikh and the Guru. The langar, or free cafeteria, is open throughout the day for all visitors. This is a way of showing equality and brotherhood amongst all Sikhs, regardless of their economic status.
