History:

Timgad was founded by Roman Emperor Trajan in the 2nd century AD. Located in the Aurès Mountains of what is now the province of Batna in Algeria, Timgad was an important garrison town designed to provide a secure military presence in the area. Timgad was the site of the last major battle against indigenous Numidian forces to secure Roman control of North Africa. The city was constructed around a main square, and was organized according to a grid pattern typical of Roman towns. Its most famous monument is the Trajan Arch, built in honor of Trajan in 109 AD.
