St. Demetrius' Church, Berat is a Greek Orthodox church located in the city of Berat, Albania. It was built in the early 15th century and is one of the oldest churches in Albania. The church is dedicated to Saint Demetrios, the protector of the city. St. Demetrius' Church is noted for its fine frescoes and is listed as a Monument of Culture of First Category by the Albanian government. St. Demetrius' Church was built by the wealthy Berati families, the Manakia, the Komino and the Ponglli, in line with the period of time and the law that restricted all Orthodox churches to one corner of the city. The original church collapsed in the 18th century due to an earthquake and was demolished. The current church was reconstructed in 1929 and, although smaller than the original, retains much of its original style, design and murals. The interior frescoes mostly date from the 16th century and are among the finest examples of Byzantine art in Albania. St. Demetrius' Church has services on Sunday mornings and throughout the week, as well as other special occasions.
