History:

The Port of Durrës is one of the oldest and most important harbors in the Adriatic. It naturally became a commercial port due to its proximity to Rome and Greece. Ancient Greeks placed strongholds in the city in order to protect the harbor and its trade routes, making Durrës a sure stop for Roman and Byzantine ships. During the Middle Ages, the city experienced a period of economic growth when it was part of the Kingdom of Albania.
