Kisha Apostolike e Re In Albania: History,Facts, & Services
Kisha Apostolike e Re is the Albanian Orthodox Church. It is recognized as a canonical Orthodox Church by the Ecumenical Patriarchate and is located mainly in Albania and Kosovo. The history of the Church dates back to 395 A.D. when the Roman Empire divided into two parts, East and West. The Eastern part became the Byzantine Empire, ruled by the first Orthodox Patriarch, St. John Chrysostom. When the Ottoman Empire conquered Albania in the 16th century, many Orthodox churches were destroyed and converted to Islam. Although the Orthodox Church of Albania suffered greatly it remained faithful to Orthodoxy.
The officially re-established Albanian Orthodox Church was recognized on May 7, 1937 by a Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate convened in Constantinople, Turkey. Bishop Christo Proykov was appointed as the first head of the Church, and the Archdiocese of Shkodra was established with Archbishop Christo Proykov as its primate. Since then, the Church has grown and now consists of four dioceses headed by metropolitan bishops.
Services at the Orthodox Church of Albania are held in the Albanian language, along with Greek and Slavonic. The Holy Eucharist is celebrated according to the Byzantine Rite, with the Divine Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom. Along with the weekly Divine Liturgy, other services such as the Hours, Vespers, and Akathist Hymns are also celebrated. Additionally, the Church holds major feast days such as the Nativity of our Lord, Visitation of the Virgin Mary to Elizabeth, and the feasts of Saints.
The Church also has a number of monasteries, many of which have served as places of refuge for persecuted believers throughout its history. There is also a seminary training clergy in the Church’s theology and liturgical practices, and several active religious orders. Monastic and other spiritual life is an important part of the Church’s life, and many of its members are active in various ministries in local parishes and communities.
