History:
Borsh is a beachside village in the county of Sarandë, Vlorë, in the southern part of Albania. It is the largest beach in the area with 3 km of mainland coastline, and is one of the most popular tourist spots in Albania. The earliest known inhabitants of Borsh were believed to have been the Illyrian tribe of Taulanti who settled there in the 4th century BC. The village was then ruled by the Ancient Greeks and then the Romans who developed an amphitheater and theatre (only remnants of which still exist today). The area was known as Borsigrath, meaning “cape of Borsh”. In 1537, Borsh was conquered by the Ottoman Empire and remained under Turkish rule until 1912, when it fell under the control of the fledgling Albanian state. During this time, Borsh was a major producer of olive oil and was home to many of the region’s most powerful feudal families. In the 1980s, Borsh became a popular tourist destination, with white sand beaches and stunning scenery. The area was developed rapidly with the building of new hotels, restaurants, and other facilities. In 1994, Borsh hosted the Mediterranean Games. Today, Borsh remains an idyllic beach town, with crystal blue waters, sandy beaches, and traditional Albanian restaurants. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities, from water-based activities and sun-bathing to hiking, sightseeing, and shopping.
