After his father passed away in 1842, Sher Ali Khan became Amir of Afghanistan and was determined to remain independent from the encroaching British forces. He declared war on the British Raj in 1878 and actually defeated two British invasions. However, his success was short-lived as a third invasion in 1881 resulted in his retreat from power. He passed away in late February, 1879, in Mazar-i-Sharif, and his tomb in Herat was constructed to protect and preserve his legacy and memory. It was made of large brick and stone, and the exterior is covered with white stone tiles and intricate designs.
