The main building was designed by the architect Lauritz de Thurah and built by Severin Lütken in 1763, on the same spot as the medieval Nysø Castle.The manor belonged to the noble Bille family from the late 17th century until 1919 when it was acquired by the Jørgensen family. The Jørgensens in turn sold it in 1927, and Nysø Manor first became a casket factory and later the headquarters of the Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Manufactory. In 1945 the manor was restored to its original state and has since been owned by the local municipality.Today the manor is open to the public as an art museum, exhibiting works of the Jens Juel and Martinus Rørbye. The manor also includes a memorial garden featuring restored trees from the original castle gardens.
