Liselund Manor located on the 1954-era grounds of Møn, in the southeastern part of Denmark, was originally built in 1763 during the reign of King Frederick V. The main building was designed by the royal court architect, Johan Cornelius Krieger, in a classical style with white-washed facades and a curved gatehouse. The main house is two-storeyed, with a large hall and drawing room on the ground floor and a bed chamber and dressing room upstairs. Surrounding the main house, a terraced garden in the English style was located in a particular part of the property, as mentioned by the poet and painter Harald Sudhedn at the time. The grounds of Liselund have also been home to a number of other outbuildings including a mausoleum, a carp pond, an orangerie, a dairy, a fishing house, an old gamekeeper’s house, and a pavilion.Due to a combination of fires and state management, very little of the main house and grounds have survived. In 1895, the property was bought by the landowner P.P. Ørum, and he commissioned the architect Axel Salto to rebuild the manor and grounds. As a result, the manor and gardens were given their current appearance. In 1936, the property was bought by Ellen Steincke-Harbou, a descendant of the original owners, who proceeded to open the grounds to the public. The National Museum of Denmark took over in 1972, restoring the manor, the pavilion, and the mausoleum as best as was possible while maintaining the historic appearance and integrity of the grounds. Today, Liselund Mansion and its surrounding gardens are still open to the public, offering visitors a historic look into the past of life in Møn as well as various events throughout the year.
