History
The castle was built in the early 16th century by the local lord of Fenalet, Jean-André d'Oron. In 1632, the castle was purchased by the Bercken family. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands several times until it came under the possession of Anne-Joseph Phélypeaux de Pontchartrain who was the president of the Fribourg Parliament.
In 1809, Pontchartrain sold the castle to Jean-Gabriel Droz who owned it until his death in 1833. In 1840, it was bought by Philibert d'Oron who then sold it to the commune in 1865. The commune restored the castle in 1878.
Today, the castle is used as a cultural center by the commune. It houses a museum and a library and is used as an event venue for cultural events.
Description
Château de Fenalet is a two-story stone structure with a slate roof. It has a large central tower and several additional towers and turrets. It is surrounded by a moat which is crossed by a stone bridge.
Apart from the main castle, there is a secondary building, the Reflets de Fenalet, which was added by theBercken family in 1790. It is a two-story structure surrounded by high walls.
The castle is open to the public and can be visited by prior appointment.
