Château de Picomtal is a castle located in Crots, Hautes-Alpes, France. It is situated on a rocky outcrop above the village of Crots, about 15 kilometres northwest of Gap. The castle, located at an altitude of 1650 metres, affords commanding views over the surrounding valley.
The castle was built in 1399 by the influential Deschaux family, a Berber origin family. It was part of a defensive system, comprising three other fortresses, known as the Château des Deschaux. The family was extinguished in 1481, and the castle was abandoned for a number of years.
In 1511, Jean- Phillippe de Crots acquired the castle and began to rebuild it. Over the course of the 16th century, the de Crots family would add further extensions and modifications to the castle, giving it its present appearance.
During the 17th and 18th centuries, the castle underwent extensive renovations, including the addition of the north tower. Additional fortifications were also added around the castle walls in order to strengthen the defences.
In 1896, the castle was acquired by the Vermeil family, who used it as a summer residence until 1932. It then passed into the hands of other private owners until it was acquired by local authorities in the 1990s.
The castle has been placed on the official list of historic monuments, and is open to visitors. It also hosts annual events, which include a medieval festival. However, no overnight accommodation is available within the castle.
