It was part of a defensive system, comprising three other fortresses, known as the Château des Deschaux. The family was extinguished in 1481, and the castle was abandoned for a number of years. Over the course of the 16th century, the de Crots family would add further extensions and modifications to the castle, giving it its present appearance. During the 17th and 18th centuries, the castle underwent extensive renovations, including the addition of the north tower. Additional fortifications were also added around the castle walls in order to strengthen the defences.In 1896, the castle was acquired by the Vermeil family, who used it as a summer residence until 1932.
