The origins of the castle go back to the 11th century. The first fortifications were erected by followers of Henry II of England in 1148, during the wars of succession of Anjou. By the mid-14th century, the castle was in the possession of Jean Maillé, Seigneur de Montreuil-Bellay. His successor, Pierre Maillé, was responsible for the construction of the late 14th-century castle we see today.
The fifteenth century saw the castle become the property of Jean de Brosse, son of Louis I, the Duke of Brittany. in 1519, Jean de Brosse, who had been appointed governor of Maine and Anjou, passed the castle on to his son, François I, who had it remodeled by Jean Delespine, an Italian architect, and enlarged its dimensions. In 1598, the castle was damaged by the Duke of Anjou, son of Henri II of France, when it was besieged during the French Wars of Religion. In 1610, the castle was largely destroyed by fire. The rebuilding of the castle was completed in 1684.
In the 18th century, the castle was bought by Jean-Joseph de Sérent, who had it renovated and embellished with gardens laid out according to the designs of André Le Nôtre.
