Taras Bhaban, on the University of Dhaka campus, is the finest neo-Classical building in Bangladesh. It was designed by the well-known British architect, Watson Batty and built in 1924 for use as the conjoined residence of the two principal families in Dhaka – the renowned Talukdar and Muhammad Ali families. The building is an impressive example of neo-Classical architecture, characterized by its symmetrical composition, its two large central domes set atop the main pavilions and its late Mughal-style jali works. The building took seven years to construct and cost around Rs. 2.5 million in 1924. The two families donated the building to the University of Dhaka in 1947, shortly after the partition of British India. Over the years, it continued to function as a residence for Heads of the Vice-Chancellors and their families until 2000, when the government took it over. Since then, Taras Bhaban has been renovated several times and is now a unique blend of modern and traditional architecture, devoted to research and teaching purposes.
