Haldenstein Castle is a castle in the municipality of Haldenstein in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. It was first mentioned in 1148, when the Lords of Haldenstein are mentioned in a document. Originally the castle was a possession of the Lord of Haldenstein, who were related to the Counts of Montfort and the Counts of Toggenburg.
In 1272, the castle was destroyed by the League of God's House. It was rebuilt by the Haldenstein lineage under their leader Arnold IV von Haldenstein. In 1338, they sold the castle and associated lands to the city of Chur, who held it until 1300.
During the 16th century, the castle was held by the Ludovic, Rheinberger and Schlattner families. It finally came under the ownership of the Hasen family in 1680 and it stayed in their possession until 1798 when it was sold to the Graubünden government. By 1818 the castle was almost completely abandoned until 1892 when it was purchased by the canton of Graubünden.
Today the castle is a tourist attraction and has undergone extensive renovations. It is open to the public during the summers and offers tours as well as a restaurant and a museum.
The ruins of the castle have been listed as a Swiss Heritage site of national significance.
