History & Information of Ettington Park Hotel, Warwickshire
The Ettington Park Hotel in Warwickshire has a long history, with records first indicating a building on the site as far back as the 13th century. The stately home, which has been the setting for numerous films and television programs, including the 1971 adaptation of Jane Eyre, has hosted members of the Royal Family and numerous other famous visitors.
The building was first built by the Arden family, who held considerable land in Warwickshire, as a fortified house in the 13th century. It was altered multiple times over the centuries and its original stately appearance began to take shape in the 16th century when John Dudley, the Earl of Warwick, took on the building and made lavish improvements.
The building, then known as Ettington Park Manor, eventually passed into the family of Thomas Knight who, in 1820, began to significantly alter and expand the building. His sons continued to embellish the grounds by erecting a chapel, a Gothic tower, and an observatory.
Throughout the 19th century, the grounds saw the planting of various trees and gardens, as well as the extensive formation of pastures for livestock, while the building in its entirety was considerably restored and altered.
In 1961, the property was purchased and then used as a hotel, originally as a private venture. It was eventually sold in the early 1970's, and converted to a public hotel.
The building has seen a number of famous visitors, including Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh, who visited the hotel in 1967. Winston Churchill and his wife Clementine, as well as the royals of Greece and Croatia, have also stayed at the hotel. Films and television series, most notably 'Jane Eyre', co-starring Timothy Dalton and Zelah Clarke, have also been partly filmed at Ettington Park Hotel.
Today, the hotel continues to be a popular destination for tourists, offering luxurious accommodations with views overlooking the beautiful Warwickshire countryside.
