Horror Story of Château de Dourbes
The Château de Dourbes stood quietly in a cleared field of tall grass, surrounded by a deep forest. By day, it held the beauty of a structure born from a time long gone. At night however, it was entire another matter.
The locals said that it had been cursed since the middle ages when a poor farmer attempted to steal the treasure that was said to rest within its walls. That night, the castle seemed to have come alive. Doors slammed shut, whispered echoed through the halls, and a terrible laughter rained down from the tower.
The worst of it was that the farmer's body was never found. Some said that the spirits of the castle took him as payment for his trespass.
The years passed, and the castle fell into disrepair, forgotten by the world. But at night, when the moon is at its fullest, the stories say that you can still see the shape of a man outlined against the walls, banging on the gates, screaming to be let free.It is one of the most haunted places in belgium
History & Information of Château de Dourbes
The Château de Dourbes is a castle in Belgium located in the municipality of Dourbes, in the province of Namur. It is a historical monument since 1945.
The first mentions about the Château de Dourbes were found in a votive text of 1184. The building belonged to the feudal family of the Mérode, until it was sold to Baron Jean-Joseph Thissen of Brusthem in 1784. He changed the current structure of the building, giving it the classic appearance of the 18th century, with a central pavilion and two small wings.
In 1975, the Comtesse de Spoelberch de Lovenjoul, a descendant of Baron Thissen, decided to donate the site to the municipality of Dourbes, who established it as a museum.
The Château de Dourbes is now a museum of regional history, with collections of jewelry, keys, silverware and furniture from the nobility of the 19th century; a compendium of documents and memorials related to the life of the local citizens; and collections of weaponry, pottery and old photographs.
The Château de Dourbes is open to the public from May to October and remains a popular cultural hub in the region.
