The Garðar BA 64 was a steamship that was built in 1913 in Gdynia, Poland for the Royal Danish Navy. The ship was used by the Danish navy until 1948, and then sold to a Norwegian company called Artic Shipping. The vessel was then renamed Garðar BA 64 and used for trading purposes in the Iceland to Norway trade. On June 12th, 1954, the Garðar BA 64 ran into trouble while travelling from Tórshavn, Faroe Islands to Reykjavík, Iceland with a cargo of goods. Near the coast of Húsavík, the vessel struck a rock and suffered a leak in the hull, causing it to start sinking. Both the ten crew members and the captain, Oddur Einarsson, were able to safely abandon the ship onto the nearby shore and were unharmed. The wreckage was left on the shore, and eventually became a popular tourist attraction in Húsavík. In 1972, a memorial was erected to commemorate the ship and its crew members, and it still stands today.
