France to turn down lighting of Eiffel Tower early to save energy

On Tuesday, the Mayor of Paris announced that the Eifel Tower lights will be turned off an hour early to save electricity. 

The famous tower, which is often lit until one in the morning, according to Mayor Anne Hidalgo is just one of the city’s landmarks and government structures that will experience earlier nightfall as the French capital, along with the rest of France and Europe, confronts the possibility of power shortages, rationing, and blackouts this winter due to an increase in energy consumption.

Amid the Ukraine-Russia war, European countries have reduced energy imports from Russia which is gradually creating an energy crisis in many countries including France and Britain. The prices of gas and electricity are surging rapidly making problems for common citizens. 

As the heating season approaches, it has fueled inflation and increased concerns about supply shortages, leading nations to implement conservation measures and providing relief for consumers and companies. Green and sustainable tourism is in focus, France wants to save other habitats along with boosting the tourism sector in the country. 

As energy prices have risen, some European businesses have scaled down or stopped output, but the European Union is working to enact ideas to resolve the situation. From September 23 until the last visitor leaves at 11:45 p.m., the lights on the Eiffel Tower will be switched down. At 10 p.m., other city-run monuments including City Hall and Saint-Jacques tower will be turned off.
