About Grossmunster

Grossmunster (meaning Grand Minister) is a well-known Protestant church in the city of Zurich, built in the Romanesque style. It is one of the four great churches in the city, as are the other Predigerkirche, Fraumünster, and St. Peterskirche. The Grossmunster congregation is part of the Lutheran Reformed Church in the canton of Zurich. The foundations of the current Grimmmunster building on the banks of the Limmat were built on the site of the Carolingian Church. Construction of the current structure began in 1100 and was inaugurated in 1220. It was once Grossmunster Abbey Church. According to historical manuscripts, Grossmünster was founded by Charles the Great. Recent archaeological research has also confirmed the presence of Roman burials at the site. The twin towers of the Grossmünster are also considered to be the most famous sights of Zurich. The church was built in a typical Romanesque style and was part of the first pan-European architectural trend during the time of imperial Roman architecture.
