The Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C. was dedicated on November 13, 1982 at a ceremony attended by President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan. The Memorial was designed by Maya Lin and its design was chosen from more than 1,400 anonymously submitted entries in a nationwide design competition. The Memorial is located on the National Mall, along a two-acre site between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. The Memorial walls are inscribed with the names of more than 58,000 Americans who lost their lives or remain unaccounted for in the Vietnam War. This wall serves as a reminder of the emotionally charged era in US history as well as a reflection of the sacrifice of so many individuals. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, a private organization established to build the memorial, was led by veterans Jan C. Scruggs and William S. Edwards.
