The United States Capitol is the meeting place of the United States Congress and the seat of the legislative branch of the U.S. federal government. Construction of the Capitol began in 1793, for use of the U.S. Congress in 1900. The Capitol was initially designed by William Thornton, a physician and amateur architect, who proposed that it be shaped like an upturned bell-shaped dome and adorned with a painting of George Washington in across the curved interior ceiling. The Washington Monument was added to the Capitol in 1829, and the east and west wings of the building were completed in 1868. The Capitol was extensively damaged during the British Siege of Washington in August of 1814, and was almost entirely destroyed by the fire. Reconstruction began soon after the war, and by 1817 the Capitol had been partially restored. The new dome of the Capitol was completed in 1827 from cast iron and rises to a height of 96 feet. In 1851, the east and west wings of the Capitol were extended further and the cast-iron dome was replaced with a newer, fire-proof one made of iron and aluminum. This new dome stands 131 feet high and contains 365 windows. The Capitol underwent extensive renovations and extensions again in 1909-1910 and in the early 1960s. Throughout its history, the Capitol has been an iconic symbol of the United States and a reminder of its independence and strength.
