Our Lady Mother of the Church In USA: History,Facts, & Services

Our Lady Mother of the Church is a Roman Catholic Church located in Eau Claire, Wisconsin founded in 1894 by the Franciscan Friars of the Holy Name Province. The church is the first Franciscan community established in Wisconsin and was an important spiritual center for the area's immigrants, particularly those of German and Italian heritage. History In 1881, a group of Franciscan Friars of the Holy Name Province of New York arrived at Eau Claire, Wisconsin. A little over a decade later, in 1894, they founded the church on the corner of 16th and Lincoln Streets and dedicated it to Our Lady Mother of the Church. The church served as an important spiritual center for the area's immigrants, many of whom were of German and Italian origin. The Friars ministered to the needs of these immigrants, providing instruction in their respective languages and relying on personal visits in order to reach their spiritual brothers and sisters. While the Friars were primarily responsible for the functioning of the parish, laypeople were also involved. Women of the parish established a sewing society, which provided clothing for the poor, and the Ladies of the Eucharist conducted a weekly Eucharistic service for the homebound. Men of the parish built and maintained a grotto of the Virgin Mary. This grotto, which contains a life-sized statue of the Virgin Mary surrounded by statuettes of various saints, remains a popular pilgrimage site in the region.
