History:

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is the most important and influential monastery in Russian Orthodoxy. Founded in 1337 in the town of Sergiev Posad near Moscow, it is dedicated to St. Sergius of Radonezh, a 14th century monk who is widely revered throughout Russia as a symbol of the country’s spiritual identity. The original building of this monastery was a wooden structure built by St. Sergius himself and located roughly 50 kilometers from Moscow. In the 15th century, the monastery was expanded and rebuilt in stone with the support of Grand Prince Basil III, who visited and prayed at the monastery in 1479. From that time, the monastery became a major center of influence and power in Russia, particularly during the reign of Ivan the Terrible. It was during Ivan’s rule when the monastery’s library and icon collection were significantly enlarged and the Trinity Cathedral was constructed between 1539 and 1560. This stunning building—notably decorated with over 50 different dome cupolas—served to elevate the monastery to both a spiritual and a secular bastion of influence in Tsaristic Russia. After the fall of Tsarism, the monastery went through a period of decline and destruction. In the 1950s, however, it was restored by the Soviet government and reopened for public worship in 1978. Today, the monastery houses over 300 monks and is a popular tourist attraction, with large crowds gathering to pray and tour the grounds and the famous Trinity Cathedral.
