The National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame is a museum in Fort Worth, Texas that pays tribute to the women of the American West who have made significant contributions to history and culture. It was established in 1975 by Founder Betty Sharp, with the goal, “[t]o preserve for posterity the history and spirit of the women of the American West, who by their courage, strength, and independence are an inspiration to all women.” The museum first opened its doors in 1975 in a small storefront on the city's historic West Seventh Street, where it was located for over 20 years. In 2001 it moved to a larger facility near the Stockyards of Fort Worth. That year, the museum unveiled a major expansion and renovation. The new 53,000-square-foot complex holds interactive exhibits, historical artifacts, a special-events venue, and the Cattleman's Bar and Grill. The focus of the museum is to honor the accomplishments and contributions of women in the West, both past and present. In addition to traditional Western figures such as ranchers, cowgirls, singers, and actresses, the museum also recognizes women who serve in the military, as well as contemporary figures in the fields of education, business, law, politics, and science.
